Saturday Crafternoon: Heart Art

Happy Saturday everyone! Here in the north the winter cold is taking a short break and it is actually warming up a bit. Andy and I just got back from snowshoeing along a river and driving our beloved Subaru across a frozen lake (who says you cannot go drifting with AWD?).

Well, as you may have guessed today is Saturday. This means that we get to whip out an extra dose of creativity and make something awesome! Now, if you prefer to keep things simple, today’s project it right up your ally. This is because it only requires two materials: string and nails. And if you are not so into the whole heart idea, try it out with other shapes! The possibilities with this project are truly endless. So, without further adieu, let’s get started on some Heart Art.

What You Need:

  • String (I used hemp)
  • Nails  (I used 18 finishing nails)
  • Scissors
  • Hammer
  • Pencil

The Process:

1. Decide how much space you would like to fill on the wall of your choice. With a pencil, lightly mark the approximate locations for the nails. Step back from the wall and see if there are any markings that need to be adjusted before you hammer away.

2. After you are satisfied with the location of the pencil marks, hammer each of the nails into the wall at the places you marked with pencil in step 1. Leave about 1 inch of space between the wall and tops of the nails. Step back from the wall again to see if there are any nails that should be adjusted before proceeding to step 3.

3. When you are satisfied with the location of the nails, tie one end of the string to one of the nails. With the string still attached, move around, across, up and down the shape each time wrapping the string around different nails on opposite sides of one another. Be sure to fill in all the outside edges of the shape and not to go over the same “paths” of string more than once.

4. When all the outside edges are completed and the shape is filled in to your liking, you are done! Yes, it really is that simple!

The Result:

I hope you have fun with this project! If you have any comments, questions or concerns, please let me know! And if you do take on this project, please share your final product in the comments below. I would love to see it! 🙂
