Travel Tip Tuesday: Delightful Delicacies

Welcome back friends! I hope that you have had a wonderful day. Here in the north the sun was shining all day long and the temperature has dipped up to about 0 degrees. Just about perfect weather for going on afternoon walks and playing pick-up games of hockey. Andy and I also tried something entirely different today. We spontaneously decided to join a class to learn the language of Cree. Yes, it is very random and our pronunciation of words was probably horrible, but we had a ton of fun and got to learn something new. Starting off 2017 with a bang!

Well, it is Tuesday which means that we get to explore yet another travel tip here on This Darling Adventure. If you haven’t had the chance to read the travel tips from the last couple of weeks, no worries at all. Just to catch you up, we have been going through a “mini series” through which my ultimate goal is to persuade you to believe that traveling does not need to be expensive. During the first week, we discussed The A to B’s of Traveling (better known as transportation) and how to get from place to place when abroad. Then, last week we talked about Places to Count Your Sheep (a.k.a. where to stay) when traveling so you don’t have to break the bank. And that all has led us to this week.

Today we get to wrap up this mini series by looking at the third area of travel that we all know and love: delightful delicacies (more commonly known as food)! Now, I get it. This can be a touchy subject for many because often one of the biggest reasons for traveling is to try new and unfamiliar foods. However, there are ways of being able to enjoy the foodie culture of the place you are going whilst simultaneously saving your hard-earned money.

One of the biggest ways to cut down the expenses of food is by simply heading to the grocery store. Andy and I have done this A LOT when traveling and it has enabled us to eat cheaply and healthy when being abroad. We just find a grocery store (or small market) in the country we are in and “stock up” on foods we can eat and transport easily from place to place. Hard-boiled eggs, sandwich supplies, rice cakes, fruits and veggies, chickpeas, and nuts are just a few of the things we have found can cover the majority of our meals on the go.

If there are no grocery stores around, not to worry. Farmers markets can be even better (disclosure: this depends on what country you are in). One of my favorite farmers markets was in Hawaii. Fresh avocados, papayas, mangos, passion fruit, and bananas…. YUM! The list goes on! Or in Israel. There we had our share of bananas, halva, oranges, and (of course) dates. So much good stuff, so little time.

By choosing to go to grocery stores or farmers markets when traveling, you will be amazed at how much you can save. Of course, there is nothing wrong with trying new foods in restaurants or with going out to eat. However, by limiting the times you do go out to eat, you will definitely save some money (and probably eat healthier too!). I know, it is super simple, but it is an option not many of us think about when we are not at home.

I sincerely hope that you have enjoyed this “mini series” for our Travel Tip Tuesdays over the last few weeks. Thanks for reading! It has been an absolutely pleasure. Have an awesome evening friends!

    1. That’s awesome! Glad to hear it 😊and exactly! Sometimes it’s really nice to try various places out, but for the most part grocery stores are the way to go! It can be funny to attempt to read ingredients though in other languages. The struggle is so real in those situations 😂
